All software components are engineered to provide the maximum level of reliability and openness using the Java platform. We are able to easily configure and utilize the lowest-cost, highest performance hardware available today and easily migrate to the latest and greatest in the near future.

Since our technology is written for the Java platform, it can run on a wide variety of platforms that support the Java Virtual Machine. Information can be stored in any relational database through the use of the Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) layer. The archive uses a file system abstraction for storing DICOM images. A hierarchical file system can be used with the archive to automatically handle migration of DICOM images between different types of media such as disk, optical, and tape. Finally, Emageon products use standard network hardware to communicate with other DICOM systems on your network.

Emageon selected Java as the development language for our software for a number of reasons. Java is an excellent language for developing high performance, distributed systems such as medical image management systems. Advantages of Java as a software platform include:

Java is supported on a wide range of machines and operating systems. This platform transparency allows Emageon to quickly take advantage of new hardware and platforms, support the platforms of choice of our customers, and provide long-term support for our products on the best available hardware.
